Hugo Minnaar is a Graduate Clinical Technologist specialising in Critical Care, commonly referred to as a Critical Care Technologist and internationally recognised as a Critical Care Practitioner / Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) / Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP). Uniquely, Hugo also qualified as a Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA) at the age of 16 and progressively advanced through the South African EMS qualification framework. This dual progression has positioned him as a true hybrid clinician, seamlessly integrating pre-hospital emergency care with in-hospital emergency and critical care practice.

His in-hospital career spans several major academic and tertiary institutions, including Mamelodi Hospital, HF Verwoerd Hospital (Steve Biko Academic Hospital), Johannesburg General Hospital (JHB/163), and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. In parallel, his pre-hospital career began with the Transvaal Ambulance Services, followed by roles within Tshwane Emergency Services, Netcare 911, STAR, Transvaal Ambulance Training College, and LifeMed.

Hugo completed the National Diploma in Clinical Technology (Critical Care), which covered extensive foundational and applied sciences, including Anatomy & Physiology I–II, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biochemistry I–II, Pharmacology I–II, Clinical Practice I–II, Clinical Technology Practice I–II, and Biomedical Apparatus and Procedures. He subsequently obtained the BTech in Clinical Technology (Critical Care), encompassing advanced Anatomy & Physiology III, Pharmacology III, Clinical Practice III, and Clinical Technology Practice III.

He later completed a rigorous MSc in Clinical Ultrasound, endorsed both internationally and in South Africa through SAQA. His professional interests include Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Transport, ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), and advanced vascular access procedures. Hugo has trained internationally in countries such as Italy, the UAE, and the Netherlands, remaining at the forefront of vascular access and critical care practice.

Hugo served as faculty for the 2023 and 2025 HITTER (High-Intensity Trauma Training & Emergency Rescue)courses in Rome, hosted by IntubatEM, alongside internationally recognised faculty including Mansoor Khan, Riaan Pretorius, Vicky Jennings, Ruvan Jacks, Andreu Martinez, Neville Vlok, and others. He is also a faculty member of the ECMO Specialist Course presented by ECMOSA.

With nearly 22 years of instructional experience, Hugo is an accomplished educator certified to instruct Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), ACLS-EP, Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), Tactical Medicine (TACMED), and AREMT Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and Critical Care programmes.

His teaching career began at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, where he trained Clinical Technologists, Nurses, and Doctors across multiple disciplines, including Intensive Care Units, Anaesthetics and Theatre Assistance, High Care, Pulmonology, and Emergency Medicine. Beyond the hospital environment, Hugo has over 20 years of experience in pre-hospital emergency medical care, serving in primary response, ambulance operations, and aeromedical services within both government and private EMS systems.

Hugo remains deeply committed to continuing professional development (CPD) and regularly presents educational sessions on advanced Critical Care and Emergency Medicine topics. He is actively involved with the University of Pretoria Skills Laboratory, where he teaches advanced procedural skills such as intubation, central venous catheter (CVC) insertion, implantable cardiac device (ICD) procedures, and ultrasound-guided techniques. Notably, he single-handedly trained an entire fifth-year medical cohort in the E-FAST ultrasound protocol in preparation for their clinical transition into sixth year.

In addition to his clinical and academic career, Hugo brings extensive business and leadership experience within the healthcare sector. He has held directorial roles in several medical and ambulance service organisations, including being a founding member of LifeMed Ambulance Service, which continues to operate successfully, as well as establishing International Medical Services. His vision of uniting resuscitation professionals culminated in the Masters of Resuscitation 2023 Conference (7–9 September), which attracted over 300 delegates, featured four pre-conference workshops, and hosted more than 40 international and local faculty members and speakers.

Hugo completed a fellowship in Florence, Italy, specialising in PICC and port insertions, a service that will soon become more widely available in South Africa. With over 20,000 vascular access lines inserted and more than 2,000 successful intubations, he is widely regarded as an authority in advanced airway management and vascular access.

Driven by a passion for integrative and preventative medicine, Hugo also completed a PhD in Alternative Medicine, focusing on the integration of Western medical practice with complementary approaches, particularly in the fields of infertility and immune system disorders.

Looking ahead, Hugo embarked on an additional PhD journey in 2024, further expanding his contribution to emergency medicine, critical care, education, and healthcare innovation.
